Can You Get Disability for Depression? How SSDI Evaluates Your Claim

Reviewed by Gretchen Johnson, J.D., LL.M.

Depression isn't just feeling down. It can empty your energy, scatter your focus and make showing up feel impossible. If that's where you are, SSDI may help.

Can you get disability for depression?

Yes. Social Security uses listing 12.04. You'll need medical records of your symptoms and proof of how they limit you.

What does Social Security look at?

Four everyday areas: remembering and using information, getting along with people, focusing, and managing yourself. An "extreme" limit in one area, or "marked" limits in two, can meet the listing.

Is there another way to qualify?

Yes. If you've been in treatment for 2+ years and still struggle with change, that can count. Or Social Security may find you'd miss too much work to hold a job.
