Do Psychotic Disorders Qualify for SSDI? What Social Security Considers
Reviewed by Gretchen Johnson, J.D., LL.M.
Psychosis can make the world feel unreliable. Keeping a job through that is hard. Here's how SSDI looks at it.
Which disorders count?
Listing 12.03 covers schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, schizophreniform disorder and other psychotic disorders.
What do I need to show?
Records of symptoms like delusions or hallucinations. Plus serious limits in daily life, or 2+ years of treatment with ongoing struggles.
Does it need to last a year?
Yes. A short episode that fully clears won't qualify. One that keeps coming back can.
What if drugs or alcohol are involved?
Social Security will ask if you'd still be disabled without them. Records from sober periods help.
