How Family Statements Can Help a Schizophrenia SSDI Claim

Reviewed by Gretchen Johnson, J.D., LL.M.

People with schizophrenia don't always notice their own symptoms. Family often sees what doctors miss.

Why do family statements matter?

Social Security can use statements from people who know you well. They fill in daily-life details that medical records can't.

What should one include?

  • How long and how often they've seen you
  • Specific examples of symptoms
  • What help you need each day

Example: "Since 2023, my brother has needed reminders to eat and shower. Twice a week, he tells me people are watching him through the TV."

Is there a form?

Yes. Form SSA-3380 (the third-party function report) or SSA-795. One page is plenty.
