Multiple Sclerosis and SSDI: Who Qualifies and How to Apply

Reviewed by Gretchen Johnson, J.D., LL.M.

MS can change week to week. That makes work really hard to plan around. SSDI may help fill the gap.

Does MS qualify?

It can, under listing 11.09. There are two ways in: serious trouble controlling two limbs (standing up, balancing or using your arms), or a "marked" physical limit plus a "marked" limit in thinking, focus or managing yourself.

Don't meet the listing?

You can still qualify. Fatigue, vision problems and flares that keep you home all count.

How do I apply?

Online at ssa.gov, by phone or at a local office. List every symptom, not just the diagnosis.
