Does Arthritis Qualify for SSDI? A Simple Guide to Eligibility

Reviewed by Gretchen Johnson, J.D., LL.M.

Stiff mornings. Swollen knuckles. Jars you can't open anymore. Sound familiar? If arthritis has taken work off the table, let's talk SSDI.

Can arthritis qualify?

Yes, if it has kept you from working, or will, for at least 12 months. Social Security uses listing 14.09 for inflammatory types like rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, and 1.18 for damaged joints like hips and knees.

What if I don't meet a listing?

Most people don't, and many still get approved. What matters is what arthritis stops you from doing. Can't type or button a shirt? That rules out a lot of desk jobs.

Quick check: Do you need a cane? Do flares keep you home a few days a month? Does morning stiffness last hours? If yes, tell your doctor and make sure it's written down.
